Director of the Institute of Forest of the Krasnoyarsk Science Center SB RAS tells how to preserve urban forests

4 July 2019 г.

Директор Института леса Красноярского научного центра СО РАН рассказал, как сохранить городские леса
Alexander Onuchin, Director of the V.N. Sukachev Institute of Forest of the Krasnoyarsk Science Center SB RAS, Doctor of Biological Sciences, professor, tells us in the program “Interview on Channel 8” how to preserve urban forests.

Not so long ago, amendments were made to Federal Law No. 7 "On Environmental Protection" regarding the formation of the green belt around million-plus cities. In Krasnoyarsk an area of about 6 thousand hectares is included into such a green belt and the area of the green belt forests around the city amounts to about 250 thousand hectares. This is one of the largest green belts in Russia, as experts say. But the state of the urban forest in Krasnoyarsk is unsatisfactory. Alexander Onuchin describes what is the cause of the actual state of the forest:

- Urban forests have a fairly solid age. For example, on the left bank of the city there are forests of Akademgorodok and Studgorodok (student quarter). The age of these natural plantations is about 90-100 years. Their condition requires special attention and, of course, this problem can be solved. For example, it is necessary to remove oppressed trees and dead wood, to treat the cuts with fungicides so that the fungal diseases do not extend to healthy forest, - says Alexander Onuchin.
