Young Krasnoyarsk scientists presented the results of research aimed at the development of the Arctic

Молодые красноярские учёные представили результаты исследований, направленных на развитие Арктики
On October 28, at the III reporting conference of undergraduates, graduate students and young scientists-grant holders of the Krasnoyarsk Regional Science Foundation, young researchers presented the results of their projects supported by the foundation and aimed at developing the Arctic and the Far North.

During the plenary session, the participants discussed the role of young scientists in the development of the Yenisei Siberia. Sergey Verkhovets, Director of the Project Office of the world-class scientific and educational center "The Yenisei Siberia", spoke about the opportunities being provided for the development of young scientists.

Vladimir Shishov, acting Director of the Institute of Fundamental Biology and Biotechnology of the Siberian Federal University, presented the criteria for successful project application and gave recommendations to future researchers.

Head of the Laboratory of Photonics of Molecular Systems at the L.V. Kirensky Institute of Physics SB RAS, Ivan Timofeev spoke about one of the most relevant areas in science: the history of development and modern application of lasers.

“As part of the conference, the results of their research were presented by young scientists - winners of a grant competition for projects aimed at supporting the Arctic. This competition is one of the most popular among young scientists in the Krasnoyarsk Region. Over two years, more than 100 applications were submitted, 46 of them received support in the amount of more than 12 million roubles. Such grant competitions for young scientists are a great opportunity for young researchers to receive not only their first grant, but also to get experience in preparing, implementing a project and peer review from leading scientists of the region,” Irina Panteleeva, Executive Director of the Regional Science Foundation, commented on the event.
The research results of young scientists were presented in three sections: "Medicine and Ecology", "Social and Economic Sciences" and "Materials and Technologies".

Among the research results presented by young scientists were: the study of the genes of the lectin pathway components of the complement system in the population of the Arctic, development of a removable projectile for correcting the direction of the well in the Far North, GLONASS ground segment antennas for the Arctic, energy-efficient production of high-purity metals, flight trajectory control aircraft in extreme conditions, and many others.

“The study of the genetic characteristics of indigenous population of the Arctic regions of the Krasnoyarsk Region at the Research Institute of Medical Problems of the North is carried out by Doctor of Medical Sciences Professor Sergey Yuryevich Tereshchenko and my supervisor, Candidate of Biological Sciences Marina Viktorovna Smolnikova, including the study of the genes of immune response proteins, namely lectins, - says Marina Malinchik, a junior researcher at the Research Institute of Medical Problems of the North, who took part in the reporting conference. – In this study supported by the Krasnoyarsk Regional Science Foundation, we have found that the populations of the Taimyr Dolgano-Nenets region (Nenets and Dolgans) have a lower prevalence of deficiency of one of the lectins, MASP-2, as compared to Russians, which indicates a high activity of the lectin pathways for activation of the complement system in these poeple and greater resistance to various infections.”

An active discussion of the projects of young researchers ended with a meeting of the KRSF expert commission, where all the presented reports received a positive assessment, and scientific reports were approved.

We congratulate the participants of the conference on the successful presentation of projects and invite you to take part in the new grant competition for projects aimed at the development of the Arctic. Applications are accepted until November 10th. Detailed information is available on the official website of the Foundation in the "Active competitions" section (https://www.sf-kras.ru/konkursy/aktivnye-konkursy).
