The history of the academic chemical institute in Krasnoyarsk began in 1960 with the establishment of a chemical laboratory in the Institute of Physics SB USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1964 the laboratory began working at an independent chemical problem under the leadership of Candidate of Chemical Sciences M.S. Levinson. In 1974, the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences established in Krasnoyarsk a department of сhemistry of platinum metals of the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry SB USSR AS under the supervision of Candidate of Chemical Sciences G. D. Malchikov. The chemical laboratory of the Institute of Physics was included into the department and became the basis for this newly organized department.

The Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technology of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences was established at the beginning of 1981. S.P.Gubin, Doctor of Chemical Sciences was appointed the director-administrator. The director of the Institute of Catalysis, SB AS Academician G.K.Boreskov made a great contribution into the creation of the new institute and provision of the facilities for the research. Upon his initiative, a department of coal chemistry was created which attracted scientists and specialists from the Institute of Catalysis SB AS, the new department was headed by Doctor of Chemical Sciences B.N. Kuznetsov. From  1981 till 1989 the Institute was headed by A.I. Kholkin, being Candidate of Chemical Sciences in those years; he is now an Academician, the Chairman of the RAS Scientific Council on the scientific foundations of chemical technology. By 1988 two basic scientific directions had been formed in the Institute, i.e., those of coal chemistry and chemical metallurgy.  The complementarity of the two scientific directions contributed into complex task solving, in particular, treatment of coals of the Kansk-Achinsk Fuel Energy Complex, chemico-metallurgical problems, problems of organic synthesis etc. In 1989 the Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technology SB RAS by the decision of the Presidium of SB RAS was transformed into the Joint Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technology including the Institute of Chemistry and Chemical-Metallurgical Processes    (the director was Doctor of Chemical Sciences G.L.Pashkov) and Institute of Natural Organic Raw Materials (the director was Doctor of Chemical Sciences B.N.Kuznetsov).  In 1997 the Institute was again reorganized: the two Institutes were combined into one – Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, SB RAS. From 1997 till 2010 the Institute was headed by the Laureate of the State Prize and The Prize of the Government of the Russian Federation in the area of science and technology, Corresponding Member of RAS, Doctor of Technical Sciences, G.L. Pashkov. From 2010 till 2011, Doctor of Chemical Sciences B.N. Kuznetsov and Doctor of Chemical Sciences Anshits were the Deputy Directors of the Institute. From 2011 till 2013, the Chairman of the Presidium of KSC SB RAS, Academician V.Ph. Shabanov headed the Institute. Since 2014 Doctor of Chemical Sciences N.V. Chesnokov has been the director of the Institute.
