L.V. Kirensky Institute of Physics SB RAS (I.Ph. SB RAS) was organized on the basis of the Resolution of the USSR Academy of Sciences on 12 October, 1956 at the initiative and under the supervision of Leonid Vasilyevich Kirensky. It included three laboratories, namely the laboratory of physics of magnetic phenomena (the head of the laboratory was L.V. Kirensky), and those of biophysics (its head was I.A.Terskov) and spectroscopy (the head was A.V. Korshunov). In 1959 the laboratory of crystal physics was established (with K.S. Aleksandrov in its head). These laboratories formed the basis for scientific directions of the Institute. Since August 2016 the Institute has been a member of the Federal Research Centre “Krasnoyarsk Science Centre of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences”, which has been under the supervision of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation since June 2018.

The main scientific directions:

current problems of physics of condensed matter including quantum macrophysics, mesoscopy, physics of nanostructures, spintronics, superconductivity;
physical materials science: new materials and structures including fullerenes, nanotubes, graphenes, and other nanomaterials as well as metamaterials;
current problems of optics and laser physics, including the achievement of limiting power and energy concentrations in time, space and spectral range, exploring new spectral bands, super-high resolution spectroscopy and frequency standards, precision optical measuments, problems of quantum and atomic optics, interaction of radiation with a substance;
modern problems of radiophysics and acoustics, including the fundamentals of radiophysical and acoustic methods of communication, location and diagnostics, investigation of non-linear wave phenomena.
