In the Krasnoyarsk Region, near Zheleznogorsk, an underground research laboratory is being created in the gneiss rocks of the Nizhnekansk area. The work is carried out in accordance with the decree of the Government of the Russian Federation, according to which the commissioning of this facility is envisaged at the third stage of creating a unified state system for radioactive waste management.
The facility has no analogues in Russia, as it simulates the conditions of radioactive waste disposal and provides the maximum reliability of long-term safety assessments. Research of the rock mass will be performed without using radioactive materials from the beginning of construction, throughout the entire construction of the laboratory and subsequently, for at least 5 years until a decision is made.
“Science is the foundation for the development of any innovative industry. When there is a deep scientific work behind the construction or any decision, then the implementation of the project does not raise objections. This point is of importance for us in nuclear industry. Ultimately, when the enterprise has serious scientific organizations as partners, it is much easier to work, ” Deputy General Director of NO RAO, Director of the Zheleznogorsk branch, Vitaly Gorbatov emphasized the importance of cooperation with the Science Center.
The agreement between the Federal Research Center "KSC SB RAS" and NO RAO is an opportunity to combine efforts in the field of research, innovation and educational activities.
“Developing relationships with government corporations is an important part of our business. Traditionally, the research organizations of the Academy of Sciences relied on budgetary funding within the framework of their state assignment. Of course, this remains the most important part of our work. But the experience and expert capabilities of our departments and employees allow us to count on substantial funding from government customers, for whom qualified scientific expertise is the basis for further development, "commented Alexander Shpedt, director of the Krasnoyarsk Scientific Center SB RAS.
