Krasnoyarsk scientists have fabricated miniature band-pass filters for satellite antennas

The Scientific and Production Enterprise "Radiosvyaz" is known for its developments in the field of defense technologies, satellite and tropospheric communication stations, and guidance systems. For reliable operation of the receiving navigation system, it is necessary to filter the included frequency spectrum. For this purpose band-pass filters are used - devices which pass only the desired part of the entire frequency range. The new navigation developments of the enterprise require special filters of compact size. The enterprise of the defense industry has turned to the L.V. Kirensky Institute of Physics SB RAS with an assignment for their designing and fabrication.
The researchers of the laboratory of scientific instrumentation at the Krasnoyarsk Science Center SB RAS have developed miniature frequency-band-pass filters based on strip resonators on a suspended substrate. Such devices of small size have excellent electrical characteristics. It took only a month to develop filters, and at the moment they are already being mass-produced.
The laboratory of scientific instrumentation was formed in early 2019 as part of the national project "Science" on the basis of the previously existing laboratory of electrodynamics and microwave electronics. To create band-pass filters, the scientists used a previously patented development - miniature resonators on a suspended substrate. The resonator is the core of a filter, which accumulates electromagnetic energy at a certain frequency. As a result, a filter consisting of resonators passes only a certain frequency range. Owing to the previous work, the researchers already knew what type of resonators should be used to obtain the characteristics specified by the customer. Therefore, it was not difficult for them to create miniature filters satisfying all the stated requirements.
The device can be used not only in special equipment of the Krasnoyarsk Scientific-Production Enterprise "Radiosvyaz", but also for civil purposes, for example, in mobile and satellite communication systems. “Filters are used in all receiving devices. The frequency band contains useful information, and it is this information which must be retrieved from the entire frequency spectrum. For these purposes, filters that cut off all the unnecessary data are applied. We have developed these devices under the assignment for the systems of Scientific and Production Enterprise "Radiosvyaz". But if necessary, one can implement such filters to be used for other devices and equipment, which is quite easy, ” says Ilya Govorun, one of the authors of the development, Candidate of Technical Sciences, research associate of the laboratory of scientific instrumentation at the L.V. Kirensky Institute of Physics SB RAS.
