Krasnoyarsk Science Center of SB RAS held a conference of the RAS-supervised schools

23 April 2021 г. FRC KSC SB RAS

Красноярский научный центр СО РАН провел конференцию опорных школ РАН
In 2019, a new project was launched in Russia - schools supervised by the Russian Academy of Sciences. More than 100 schools across the country are participating in it. In Krasnoyarsk, according to the results of an independent examination, three schools were chosen for this purpose: school 10, lyceum 7 and gymnasium 13. Training schoolchildren in such schools is supervised by researchers from the Krasnoyarsk Science Center of SB RAS. The project has many objectives, including the task to enable talented children to get into the scientific world, expand their understanding of science, find a perspective direction, or a university, and build a career. The main goal is to attract young personnel and future specialists to science.

At the end of the year, the young students studying in academic classes presented their scientific projects at the XXIV Interdisciplinary Conference of Young Scientists FRC KSC SB RAS, section “RAS-supervised schools”. It was held on April 22 at the gymnasium 13 in Akademgorodok. This is the second annual conference for students of the flagship schools. Each educational institution included in the project has its own scientific direction. At the 13th gymnasium, it is molecular biology and personalized medicine. At the 7th lyceum this is chemical and biological research, most notably, complex processing of renewable raw materials. Secondary School 10 focuses on Physics and Mathematics. Schoolchildren of the eighth and ninth grades presented 16 reports. They worked on their projects for several months. In their work, they were assisted by supervisors, researchers who guided the students in their study of literature on the topic of their research, in their experiments performed and discussed the results.

“It was not easy to start work, the eighth grade students still do not have sufficient theoretical training, they have just begun chemistry and biology according to the curriculum, but we also need knowledge of the basics of genetics and molecular biology,” says Marina Smolnikova, scientific supervisor of the RAS supervised class at the Gymnasium No. 13, candidate of biological sciences, head of the team of molecular genetic research at the Research Institute of Medical Problems of the North of KSC SB RAS. - The situation was complicated by the fact that we, scientists, had not previously participated in the educational process of schoolchildren. Everyone had to learn. Nevertheless, already at the end of the first year of the project "classes supervised by the Russian Academy of Sciences" (2019-2020), children from the 13th gymnasium took part in the annual conference of young scientists of the Krasnoyarsk Science Center together with graduate students. The students presented four projects that were devoted to the study of human cells, immunology, study of the structure of proteins and nucleic acids. Last year, the report devoted to the study of the composition of meat products won first place at the conference. "

At the conference in 2021, the jury members, scientists from the FRC KSC SB RAS, noted the good level of preparation and awareness in the choice of topics. The best project was presented by Anna Zakharchenko and Yulia Lisitsyna, schoolgirls of the 7th lyceum, namely "Isolation of pectin from the tree bark." The scientific supervisor, Yuri Malyar, Candidate of Chemical Sciences, Senior Researcher at the Institute of Chemistry and Chemical Technology SB RAS said that Anna and Yulia had already participated in the conference last year, and they have been working with enthusiasm and clearly see their future in biochemistry.

The 2nd place went to Lev Yudasin (School 10), his supervisor being Junior Researcher at the L. V. Kirensky Institute of Physics SB RAS, Roman Moryachkov. The topic of his speech was "Computer simulation of the interaction of photons with atoms and their electron shells."

The 3rd place was shared by two scientific teams. The first included Poddubny Alexander, Chistova Arina, Soltis Maya, Potapova Ekaterina, Vasil’ko Vlada, and Shilkina Christina (Gymnasium 13). The supervisor of the project is Elena Khilazheva. The topic was "Research of differentiation of neuronal stem and progenitor cells".

The second group included Doroshkevich Irina, Voroshilov Lev, Alyabyev Nikita, Obedina Diana, Bezruchenko Yuliana (Gymnasium 13) and the supervisor of the project, Candidate of Biological Sciences Vasilisa Krasitskaya. The topic was "Study of thermal stability of celenterazine-dependent luciferases Renilla muellery, Metridia longa and NanoLuc".

Aleksey Kokorin, Dean of the Personnel Training Faculty of the Federal Research Center of KSC SB RAS, Candidate of Sciences, executor of the project on the RAS-supervised schools in Krasnoyarsk, said: “All the children receive diplomas for their portfolio. We have already raised the problem at the level of the Academy of Sciences as to how to stimulate participants. For example, what benefits for university admission could be provided for future applicants due to their participating in the projects and such conferences. There is no proven methodology yet, because the project is only two years old. But we still have time and we hope that we will be able to solve this issue, and the students of the RAS flagship schools will receive benefits or additional points when entering universities. In any case, the schoolchildren have gained experience in scientific work, skills in participating in scientific conferences. And this is their training for future research and joint work with scientists of the Russian Academy of Sciences; the students made presentations, answered questions, analyzed their results, and compared with others. There appear the first scientific ambitions. "

In 2020, the concept for the development of RAS-supervised schools in the Krasnoyarsk Region was approved. It includes a theoretical, practical, excursion and research modules. The project is supported by the Federal Research Center "Krasnoyarsk Science Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences" and the Ministry of Education of the Region ".
