Lecture by Ekaterina Shishatskaya "Regenerative Medicine and Tissue Engineering"

29 March 2021 г.

Лекция Екатерины Шишацкой «Регенеративная медицина и тканевая инженерия»
Ekaterina Shishatskaya's lecture "Regenerative Medicine and Tissue Engineering" was held as part of the All-Russian educational campaign "At the Edge of Science" within the frame of the Year of Science and Technology in Russia. Ekaterina Igorevna Shishatskaya is a Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Chief Researcher of the Federal Research Center "KSC SB RAS", Professor and Head of the Department of Medical Biology of the Institute of Fundamental Biology and Biotechnology at the Siberian Federal University. She is the winner of the Prize of the President of the Russian Federation in Science and Innovation for Young Scientists in 2009. The lecture describes the contemporary situation in biomedical materials engineering. The regenerative potential of the human body is genetically determined and limited as we cannot grow a new limb like lizards, although we can heal a not too difficult broken bone and heal an abrasion on the skin. And thus, it would be cool for people to be "lizards" in this sense! Irreplaceable loss of healthy tissue in a modern society of high speeds is accompanied by man-made injuries and chronic diseases against the background of increasing life expectancy. Tissue engineering fights tissue deficiency problems. Ekaterina Shishatskaya and her colleagues are engaged in the development of artificial materials that compensate for tissue deficits in combination with cellular technologies; these are also suitable for surgical biodegradable products such as staples, pins, etc. for connecting tissues. “At the Edge of Science” is a large-scale all-Russian educational campaign designed to popularize science, tell schoolchildren and their parents about the work of researchers. As part of the campaign, throughout the Year of Science and Technology, various events will be organized such as open lectures by leading scientists in large cities of all regions of Russia, excursions to laboratories of the best universities, popular science lectures by scientists in schools, seminars and master classes on robotics in orphan homes.
