On September 1, 2020, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vasily Filippovich Shabanov, scientific director of the Federal Research Center "Krasnoyarsk Science Center SB RAS", will be 80 years old.

The merits of Vasily Filippovich Shabanov, scientist, leader, talented founder of science, cannot be overestimated. A man of concise practical actions and versatile knowledge, for many years he has played an important role in the life of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, creatively approaching the solution of the most complex problems of developing modern science. His active position and purposeful work largely contributed to the preservation and development of the scientific and technical potential of Russia. As before, Vasily Filippovich, a recognized specialist in the field of physical chemistry of optical materials, founder of the scientific school on spectroscopy of anisotropic media, devotes much effort and energy to scientific research, training a new generation of optical physicists.

In his 80-th anniversary, Academician V.F. Shabanov is full of energy, plans, and confidence in the future. The administration and staff of the Krasnoyarsk Science Center sincerely wish Vasily Filippovich new success in his field, scientific longevity, good health and well-being!

Biographical background

V.F. Shabanov graduated from the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of the Omsk State Pedagogical Institute. Since 1964 at the Kirensky Institute of Physics SB RAS he made his scientific career from a research trainee to the director of the Institute (2004-2017). From 1988 to January 2020 he was the Chairman of the Presidium of the Krasnoyarsk Science Center of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences - RAS, currently being the Scientific Director of KSC SB RAS.
He is a professor of the Department of Quantum Electronics at the Siberian Federal University, and a professor of the Siberian State University of Science and Technology.
He has been the Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences since 1991, and Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences since 2003 in the Department of Physical Sciences.
Academician V.F. Shabanov is an outstanding Russian physicist, a major founder of science. Under his leadership, research was carried out on the optical characteristics of anisotropic media and creation of optoelectronic elements and devices on their basis. These studies contributed to the creation of the physical foundations for controlling the optical properties of photonic crystal structures, which have been intensively developing in recent years. He developed the physicochemical foundations of the technology for obtaining new materials with unique properties in the complex processing of technogenic raw materials.

Scientific interests of V.F. Shabanov: physical and chemical properties of optical media; optics and spectroscopy of photonic-crystal structures, molecular crystals, liquid crystals and composite materials based on them, creation and research of structures with controlled spectral properties for opto- and microwave-electronics devices.

V.F. Shabanov is the founder of the scientific school on spectroscopy of anisotropic media in Russia, he has trained 7 doctors of sciences and 21 candidates of sciences.
He is the author and co-author of 250 scientific papers, 5 monographs, 12 patents.
He was awarded the Order of Honor, IV Class Order “For Merit to the Fatherland”, medals “For Courage in a Fire”, “For the Development of Virgin Lands”, etc.
He was awarded with the Certificate of Gratitude from the President of the Russian Federation, and the Russian Federation Presidential Certificate of Honor.
He was presented with the Certificate of appreciation from the USSR Academy of Sciences and SB RAS.
He was honored with the medal of Merit for the city of Krasnoyarsk.
He is a member of the National Foundation "Public Recognition".
