For the first time in the history of mankind, scientists have got pictures of a black hole. They look very blurry, but before people had only artistic interpretations or simulations. Previously, it was considered impossible to take a picture of a black hole, because it attracts all matter, including light. The mass of the black hole in the galaxy M87, where the picture was taken, is 6 and a half billion times bigger than that of the Sun, and the international team was able to capture the so-called shadow of the black hole and radiation on its border. This was made possible thanks to the international network of radio telescopes throughout the Earth. The result was a kind of telescope with the size of our planet. Though Russia did not participate in this project.
- This is an absolutely dark object that emits no light, nothing else. But again, by indirect evidence, according to the existence of the objects  we observed, in the future, some new methods of observing black holes will be proposed. This is one of the  important steps towards the study of black holes, which are necessary for understanding the surrounding world and its objects,  - says leading research associate at the L.V.Kirensky Institute of Physics KSC SB RAS, Sergey Karpov.
