The birch grove in Akademgorodok needs to be cut down. Such a conclusion was made by the Forest Protection Center. Experts have found dozens of hazardous trees. All of them are dangerous for residents who go to work through the forest every day and walk there with their children.

Ivan Moiseev has been working as a resistograph for three days already. He is like a cardiologist with a device in his hands, a living organism in front of him, and at the output there is a cardiogram which is not always reassuring.
– “These irregularities 2 centimeters long here, and here, about 11 centimeters long, are stem rot, mainly in the middle. Looking at this graph, we can say with confidence that this tree is highly affected by stem rot and it is hazardous.”

Such a tree can also be distinguished by external signs: peeling bark, dry branches without leaves. But few people look up when they go to the store through the forest or just walk here. Therefore, the experts mark such trees with red paint.

Birches in this part of Akademgorodok began to be planted immediately after the Great Patriotic War. The youngest plants are over 60 years old. In total, birches live about 70 years. Therefore, in the near future it will be necessary to cut down the entire grove. New trees are going to be planted in their place, as explained in the Krasnoyarsk Science Center SB RAS.

- “We do not have any governmental body which could give us permission for such cuttings. I mean that the Krasnoyarsk Administration of Roads and Urban Development cannot give us permission, because this land is federal. The Federal Property Management Agency tells us to address to the Ministry of Education, while the Ministry of Education insists on Krasnoyarsk Administration of Roads and Urban Development being responsible for this. And, accordingly, we have such a circle,” -  emphasizes Vasily Tyranen, head of the legal department of the Krasnoyarsk Science Center SB RAS.

The Academy is waiting for a resolution from the Forest Protection Center concerning cutting hazardous trees. Scientists hope that cutting down the whole grove will act as an argument for the officials at different levels. After all, local residents will soon step in, as the risk for them already exists.
